Our neighbors need our support more than ever this year.
Many families in Union County have been severely affected by the continuing recession and further by the November 2013 cuts to social safety-net programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or food stamps). This has meant heartbreaking choices between buying food or vital medications or paying for a home heating emergency.
All funds (100%) raised by the Walk for Warmth have been designated to assist families in Union County who may not be eligible for federal energy assistance programs but who are in real need. This year, responding to deep cuts to SNAP (food stamp program) and Meals on Wheels, we have declared that "eating is heating too", and will contribute 10% of the donations for emergency food relief through Community Connection. Walkers are also encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to the event itself to help stock the Haven from Hunger emergency food bank.
By participating in this event, we are helping our neighbors who might otherwise “fall between the cracks.” The Walk for Warmth calls each of us to open our hearts and wallets to help families, friends, and neighbors through a difficult time. With partners like you, we can make a difference! For every $3,000 we raise, approximately ten local families stay safe in their homes. Thank you for accepting both the opportunity and challenge to "move your feet to give others heat."
